Elder Wendell Goudell Dean II
Funeral Director & Embalmer
Elder Wendell G. Dean II is a first-generation Funeral Director. The eldest son of the late Mr. Wendell Verona Dean I and Mrs. Dora Christine Eleanor Jones-Dean, grandson of the Late Mr. George and Mrs. Ramona Curlene Bethel-Dean of Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera, The Bahamas, and the late Mr. Erskine Nathaniel and Mrs. Amy Augusta Wilson-Jones of Bottle Creek, Turks Island and Duncan Town, Ragged Island, The Bahamas, respectively.
Wendell Goudell Dean II was born in the City of Nassau, on the Island of New Providence, The Bahamas, between Wilkinson Street and Adderley Addition, Bain Town on Thursday, August 02, 1962. He was formerly educated at Windsor Lane Primary, William Sayles Primary, Bahamas Academy, and A. F. Adderley Senior High Schools.
After celebrating his 8th birthday on August 02, 1970, word came that Wendell’s father was found dead with a single gunshot wound to the head. This was very devastating for him; hence, growing up without his dad was a challenge, in that he now didn’t know where his career path would lead. So there were summers working in auto mechanics, auto body repair, construction, and carpentry, just to name a few.
Mr. Dean’s journey into funeral service began back in late November of 1981, working part-time at Cedar Crest Funeral Home under the leadership of Mr. Keith A. McSweeney. At that time, Mr. Dean was working in the engineering department of the then Ambassador Beach Hotel, now Super Club Breezes Bahamas.
Mr. Dean had been accepted to engineering schools in Texas and Ohio. One morning, while in the shower preparing for work, the Lord appeared to him in a vision and showed him his calling in Funeral Service. During that week, Wendell spoke with Mr. McSweeney about Mortuary Colleges. He then applied to the Commonwealth College of Funeral Service, 215 Dennis Street, Houston, Texas. Mr. Dean enrolled in the summer class of 1983. Due to a family medical emergency, Wendell changed his enrollment to the Spring Class of 1984.
He is also a member of the “ETA CHAPTER” OF PI SIGMA ETA, the National Morticians Fraternity, since July 26, 1984. He is also a 1985 Graduate of Commonwealth College of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas, now the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service, where he served in the office of Sgt-At-Arms of Spring Class 1984-1985.
Upon returning to the Bahamas in June of 1985, Mr. Dean was unable to find work for a while. Then, in November 1985, he was employed for a short time at Curtis Memorial Mortuary. In 1986, he was re-employed with Cedar Crest Funeral Home, then at Rolle’s Funeral Home as Manager, 1987-1989. Rock of Ages Funeral Chapel, The Good Shepherd Funeral Home, and Bethel Brothers Morticians, 1990-1994. With some thirteen years of experience, Mr. Dean decided to fulfill the call of God on his life to serve the families of the Bahamas.
Elder Wendell Goudell Dean II is married to the beautiful Rosemarie Ingraham-Dean. He is the proud father of two sons, Chas Elijah Roshad and Wendell G. Dean III. Proud grandfather of Sir’Ra and Eliahana Dean.
He is a member of the historic Bethel Baptist Church, the oldest Baptist Church in the Bahamas and indeed the Caribbean, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. H. W. Brown and the late Rev. Dr. Timothy Stewart, where he plays trombone and is also a member of the Sanctuary Choir.
His leisure time is spent watching sports, cycling, playing basketball, playing dominoes, or going to the movies. He is also a member of the Cougars Sporting Club and played trombone with the Valley Boys Junkanoo Group.
Wendell is a member of Southwest Lodge #1789 of The Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World. He serves as a Lecturing Knight. Also, past Bahamas State Association Elks Chaplain. Now serving as the Director of the Civil Liberties Department. On Monday, August 05, 2013. Wendell G. Dean II became the first Bahamian to receive the 2013 International Leadership Award, for his work ethic, Global Leadership and Timeless Service to the Funeral Profession, from the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service were inducted into the 100 Black Men of Funeral Service at the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Inc. 76th Annual Convention, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
