Sylvia Elizabeth Betty Sweeting-Darling Age 57 Years of #01 East Beach Drive,
Freeport, Grand Bahama quietly slipped away on Thursday, November 28, 2002 at
Doctor's Hospital Nassau, New Providence, The Bahamas.
Sylvia was born in the settlement of Freetown Deep Creek, Eleuthera, Bahamas
on Friday, June 15, 1945. She was the third child.
Betty as she was affectionately known by her siblings and close friends was part of a
tightly knit family. She began her early education at the Deep Creek All Age School,
this is where she decided that she wanted to enlighten the minds of others and become an educator.
She started in her home town as a Monitor at the Deep Creek All Age School. In 1963,
Betty moved to Nassau where she majored in English Language at the Bahamas Teachers College.
She began her career as a primary school educator and eventually moved to
Secondary/High School education. Her posting included William Sayles Primary, Shirlea Primary,
C. H. Reeves and Government High Schools.
In 1988 she relocated to Freeport, Grand Bahama where she continued her teaching career
at the Hawksbill High School. Betty's desire to share her knowledge took her career to another level.
She was appointed provost at the College of the Bahamas Freeport Campus. While pursuing her
career she met and in 1968 married Thaddeus Darling.
In the early seventies Betty, because of her background in Christianity, began a serious study
of the Bible with Jehovah's Witness. She dedicated her life to doing Jehovah's Will and became a
baptized Minister. She was focused and extremely balanced in her secular life, but mostly for the
31 years of her spiritual career with regards to her family unit, of which she was the backbone.
