Shirley Mae Delores Thompson-Brown Age 52 Years of #09 Delancey Street,
taught her last class and graduated to her heavenly home at the
Princess Margaret Hospital on Sunday, March 01, 1998.
Shirley was born in Nassau, New Providence, the Bahamas on
Saturday, January 26, 1946 she was the seventh and final child.
Very early on family and friends detected that there was something exceptional about her,
something very unique. She was razor sharp on her mouth and her intellect was equally as keen.
As a child she was always loving, friendly and kind. Shilrs
attended Xavier's College under the protective care of her big brother Vivien.
His expectation for her was high, for he was convinced that she had the ability to excel.
She met and married Godfrey Inniss Sr. of Chippingham and
that union was blessed with four children, Godfrey Jr., Belfield,
Sandford and Miranda. Her life like many others was a unique
blend of successes and failures. Fate dealt her some harsh cards,
at early age. Her journey was not easy, but her heart never surrendered.
She was a hidden treasure in earthen vessel.
Her abundance of talents exceeded her years. She landed her first job as
a seamstress at Bailey's Tailor Shop, where she sewed police uniforms.
With her newly acquired skills, she soon financed and opened her own
shop on Nassau Street, specializing in school uniforms and dresses for any occasion.
A few years later she opened a snack shop on the corner of Blue Hill Road and Hay Street.
Her creativity did not stop there, soon she joined her older sister Rosalie
in the Straw Market down town Bay Street and worked there for a few years.
After leaving the Straw Market, she continued to sew at home. It was while
working at home that Mr. Frederick Curry identified her talent as a seamstress,
interior decorator and strong leader. He offered her a job at Nassau City School
as a needlework teacher. This would be the beginning of an exciting new career for her.
She was thirty years old and had given birth to ten wonderful children,
three boys and seven girls. Strong Christian principles were instilled in her children,
as she trained them in the fear of the Lord. On Sunday mornings at 6am,
it was not unsual to be awaken by a strong alto singing "Tis so Sweet to
Trust In Jesus" by the end of the second hymn if you were not out of bed,
she would coming to get you.
She met and married George Brown in 1983 and together they continued
to raise the girls. Throughout her life, Shirls was an ardent worker with a
genuine love for children. As a result, she began assisting Captain Wellington Rahming
with the 15th Company of Boys Brigade as a compassionate, enthusiastic
worker with the ability to get things done. In 1985, she took over the
leadership of the 2nd Company of Girls Brigade. Shilrs was a committed
leader, a noble and trusted captain.
Shirls spent the majority of her life as a faithful Christian and committed
member of Bethel Baptist Church, where she ministered as an usher,
choir member and in the willing workers ministry. She endured much
physical and emotional pain on her journey, but she found comfort in the service of the Lord.
On Saturday, January 03, 1998 Shirls watched attentively as her baby girl
Christina walked down the aisle and married Trevor Bethell. It was a
proud day for her. A day she had longed for.
