Samuel Woodside Sr. Age 71 Years of #09 Hibiscus Way, Palm Tree Estates
off Blue Hill Road South, Superintend his final assignment
at The Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday, April 17, 2015.
Samuel was born at Mangrove Cay Andros, The Bahamas on Sunday, October 31, 1943.
Samuel was the delight of his great-grandparents' lives, who raised him until their passing
when he was seven years old. Growing up a real 'island boy', Samuel, though small in stature,
had a profound impact on those around him as he fished,
pilfered fruits and climbed every tree in the settlement.
After the death of his great grandparents Samuel moved to East Street in Nassau, Bahamas
to live with his maternal grandparents. His love for late night dancing consequently
led Samuel to reside with his aunts Marjorie and Iris, who trained him to be a respectable man.
Mangrove Cay All Age School was Samuel's first institution of learning. After leaving his
beloved home, he attended Our Lady's Catholic School under the tutelage of the Catholic
nuns until the age of fourteen. Nonetheless, Samuel would proudly boast that his most
valuable skills were self-taught trades, which he learned by watching skilled men and
becoming a helper on various construction sites.
Although the Catholic nuns' sentiment was that Samuel was called to be a priest,
he had other plans for his life. He worked on many construction sites,
honing his skills and gaining a reputation as a skilled mason. Samuel's keen business sense
even led him to operating a Shell Gas Station before he found his niche at the
Ministry of Works on January 27th, 1969. This career enabled Samuel to travel
back to his beloved Mangrove Cay and almost every other island under the Bahamian
banner until he retired in 2009. After work Samuel, affectionately called "Logan",
would enjoy going by the dock with the boys, fishing and "talking fool".
Forty-six years ago, Samuel met the lovely Sandra Shirley Ferguson, who took his breath away
and stole his heart. In return, he gave her everything he had- his life and love.
On May 7th, 1977 the two were joined in Holy Matrimony at Christ the King Anglican Church.
Through the years their bond continued to grow and flourish into something even more beautiful,
as they enjoyed their youth, middle age and senior lives together and were shining examples
to young couples how wonderful marriage could be. In his later years, Samuel at times would
prefer to stay at home. On such occasions he would proudly send his dutiful wife as his representative.
Nothing could get between Samuel and his Sandra, even after small tiffs he would say something
"off the wall" to get her to laugh and subside the ire.
Samuel and Sandra's union produced six children, to whom he was truly
a good daddy- active in all of their lives and one who they could turn to for
advice on any subject. Granddaddy enjoyed nothing more than being
surrounded by his fifteen grandchildren, whom he enjoyed regaling with
"old stories", as he spoiled them with every treat they requested,
including 20oz cold Coke sodas. When tired, he would retire to his room,
only to be followed by the younger ones who would watch television and
"take over" the television and bed. One of Granddaddy's proudest moments
was graduating to a "Papa" at the birth of his two great-grandchildren,
and he was eagerly anticipating one more on the way. Papa enjoyed playing
"the devil's advocate" and was always ready with a narrative for every occasion
and a laugh at his own tales. His teasing quick wit would truly be missed.
A Catholic from birth, Samuel joined the Anglican Church Christ the King in the YEAR
under the priesthood of Father Murillo Bonimy. While painful knees prevented Samuel
from fully participating in church activities, he maintained a close relationship with God.
They conversed daily on a variety of topics. At night he would earnestly pray for the
well-being of his family members and friends.
Admitted to the Princess Margret Hospital on Tuesday April 7th, 2015,
Samuel still was in fairly high spirits. At each visit he would tell stories,
"crack" jokes and ask about the little ones who could not come.
