Ruthmae Ferguson-Winter Age 81 years of #1 Zenia Street, Kennedy Subdivision,
completed her final stich at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Sunday, May 14, 2017.
Ruthmae was born Wednesday, July 03, 1935 on the beautiful island of Crooked Island,
the Bahamas in the Settlement of the Cove Major's Cay.
Ruthmae was educated the All Age Elementary School in the Cove Major's Cay Crooked
Island, she studied with her longtime and best friend Elizabeth (now Deleveaux). And
they have remained close to this date. Ruthmae was accepted as a member of Bethel
Baptist Church under The Leadership of the late Rev. Dr. H. W. Brown PhD.
At the ripe age 16 years old Ruthmae meet Cleophas Clee Winter who fell in Love with
her and proposed for her hand in marriage by writing to her father Japheth Ferguson
for his solemn permission to wed his beautiful daughter. Papa did say no, so he had then
to prove his humble intentions. And so he succeeded finally and on the 17th day of August
1954 in Nassau, at St. Paul's Baptist Church East Street, officiated by The Rev. Arthur
Samuel Colebrook they were happily wedded. And remained so for the next forty two Years
of Cleophas life. This union produced no children so they took Ray as their only child.
Their lives were always happy and the lived serving and helping and feeding everyone that
entered into their gates at Kennedy. Uncle Clee was geared up for retirement, he had reached
the age of 65 in march and couldn't wait to live out the best of his days with the woman that
he loved and shared his entire life with. He had put aside all his life's savings, all his pensions
were in place and he had set out the sails, for the Crooked Island '' Bon Voyage'. However he
took ill, and spent a few months in hospital. After returning home he died three days later
on the 29th, of May.
Ruthmae discovered that her talent was fashion. She loved dressing up and wearing beautiful
clothes so she learned to sew at an early age. She would purchase all the most beautiful patterned
designs that she could find along with every fashion books and magazines and made a Profession
out of Designs. She accepted nothing less than perfection, she was so good at it she could just look
at a dress, copy it in her mind and go home and reproduce it. Every spinster had their own singer
sewing machine none electrical back then, and she sewed for customers as well as family members.
She also loved upholstery and made some of the most beautiful velvet cushions ever, the unusual
double pleated and square designs. But she never revealed her secret designs. Ruthmae studied
the art of sewing, while others sewed for a living.
Ruthmae and Ellen had a sewing competition that went on for many Years to see who had
the most knowledge for being the best and who can teach the other more tricks and newer
techniques that they discovered. Even as next door Neighbors and sisters in Law they lived
well together from the hills and valleys of mason's Addition to the high rocks of Kennedy
subdivision. They developed their own patented style so that they could recognize good work
and someone else's design a mile away. She was the genius of Kennedy Subdivision and
Masons Addition. If she couldn't catch a style or pattern she would dissect that dress until she
learnt how to reproduce that patented manufacturing format. In order to prove that there was
nothing new you could possibly ask her to do. Every time you travelled with Ruthmae and
approached a fabric store she would ask you to stop and leave her their while she bought a piece
of material, matching threads, buttons and zippers for her newest project. She studied fabric and
kept a collection in her sewing room. She became a perfectionist in her field and took it ultimately,
Personal because she branded her work.
Auntie Ruth was a fighter she singled handedly battled Breast Cancer and after the Mastectomy,
she survived a very long time. It was personal, and she chose not to be upset about it, to her it was
another phase in life so she did not talk about it. Her only comment would be "I'm still here".
She fought well and hard too.
However the uninoculability pathogenesis predominantly existent in human anatomical species
reinteratively surmise that the numerical biogenesis repossess at the third score plus ten. Granted
the ineluctability allowed us the apprehensible period for Thanksgiving. Ruthmae Winters
disembodiment was on Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock pm on a beautiful Mother's Day Celebration,
the 14th day of May in the year 2017 at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Whilst the whole world was
preoccupied with the pleasantries of A Happy Mother's Day she to went to see her Mother and her
Lord and Savior.
Following the words of the hymnologist "O for a heat to serve my God, A heart from sin set free a
heart that's sprinkled with the blood so freely shed for me!
