Retired Assistant Commissioner Of Police Nathaniel Julian Rolle

July 30, 1936 — April 21, 2009

Nassau

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Nathaniel Julian Rolle
Age 72 Years of #01 John Terrace, off Wulff Road was called from labour
to reward at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

He was born on Thursday, July 30, 1936 at James Cistern Eleuthera, Bahamas.
Doc, as he was affectionately called by his close relatives and friends impacted
the lives of many with his great sense of humor and no nonsense but firm attitude.
He attended the All Age School in James Cistern Eleuthera and did extremely well
in his studies. After leaving school, he found employment at the Missile Base,
where he remained for quite a number of years.

He later traveled to the United States, where he was employed as a
Reaper on several produce farms. After a period of two and a half years,
he returned home and eventually joined The Royal Bahamas Police Force.

Nat, as he was affectionately called by his colleagues, was courageous and
fearless in the performance of his duties. Many accounts are given of his
performance as a police motorcyclist and his lack of trepidation in confronting
anyone, armed or otherwise, who broke the law. He was fiercely loyal to
his country and to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and his integrity was
never questioned. His service and devotion to duty was exemplary and
this catapulted him to prominence with the Government, his colleagues,
and the public at large. For his integrity, courage, loyalty, competence,
and selfless service, he was invited to remain on the Force upon reaching
the retirement age. Suffice it to say, Nat was an institution on the
Royal Bahamas Police Force.

He started his career as a constable in October of 1958 and he steadily
progressed through the ranks as a Lance Corporal, Corporal, Lance Sergeant,
Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Assistant Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent,
Superintendent, and Chief Superintendent. He ultimately attained
the distinguished rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police in January of 1994.

He served for many years as the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the
Grand Bahama District and later as the Assistant Commissioner in charge
of Crime for The Bahamas. Nat's career took him to the FBI Academy,
executive training institutions in The United Kingdom, Canada,
The United States of America, and the Caribbean. He planned and
participated in numerous high-level conferences and meetings the
capstone of which was The Commonwealth Heads of Government
Meeting (CHOGM) which was held in Nassau in 1995. In Nat's case,
it is true to say that he literally "walked with kings and Queens."

His legacy looms large as a result of the work that he did as member of
the Security and Intelligence Branch where he served with distinction for
many of his best years. His legacy looms even larger in the contributions
he made to inspire and develop future generations of police leaders.
His firm grasps of their careers and his ability to incubate them during
some of the most turbulent years of our history has produced many,
if not all, of the current leaders at the top of The Royal Bahamas Police Force.

During his tenure, he was afforded the opportunity to travel extensively,
where he represented his country with a performance second to none.
His love, perseverance, and commitment to duties expressed strong leadership skills.

About four years ago, Doc experienced intestinal problems and immediately
sought professional help. In November 2008, He was admitted to
The Princess Margaret Hospital for surgery and was later discharged.

In late January of this year, he was readmitted to the hospital for further treatment.
His condition improved to the point where his doctors saw a ray of hope
and made a decision to release at the end of April. However, God had a
different plan for Nat. On Tuesday, April 21, 2009 around noon,
he suffered a massive heart attack and at 5:05 pm he succumbed to his illness.
