Jennifer Louise Johnson Age 70 Years of #05 Old Fort Bay Drive, completed her final design,
at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Florida on Sunday, April 28, 2019.
On Sunday, January 30, 1949 at Nassau, New Providence, the Bahamas a fearless beautiful baby
girl was born to Minerva Johnson and Wellington Carroll who they named Jennifer Louise. Being
the first daughter, Jennifer was especially close to her mother and automatically took on the role of
big Sister and second Mom to her younger siblings. As a child she was always curious and quickly l
earned the sewing trade where she was able to assist her mother sew the finest gowns for her clients.
Jennifer grew up in Saint Anne's church and as the story is told, she would spend every Sunday in
Sunday school, and subsequently in "adult church." This was the highlight of her week! Jennifer also
attended Saint Anne's School in Fox Hill from primary school through to her high school graduation.
Immediately following graduation she enrolled in Eastern Technical College where she acquired her
early knowledge in business and administration. Jennifer was a lover of life and learning, and while
her strong obligation to provide financial stability for her family prevented her from pursuing higher
education, she enrolled in numerous seminars, conferences and attended forums around the world to
keep abreast of local and international trends and events of interest.
At the tender age of 17 Jennifer took up employment with the Department of Home Affairs. During her
time there, she knew that she wanted more and kept her ears and eyes opened for any opportunity to
elevate herself. She soon found herself working with the Department of Immigration, which at the time,
brought her much fulfillment. She would always reminisce of the strong leadership under which she
worked and how well the system worked back then. During her time with Home Affairs she fell in love
and was over the moon when she discovered that she was pregnant with her first child, who she named
Moneira Denise. Almost four years after she gave birth to Moneira, she welcomed her second and final
child, Kenris, who she always referred to as her cross because of her feisty personality. Oh how Jennifer
loved her girls, and would do anything to protect them and ensure their happiness!
When an opportunity came knocking to travel to Freeport a few years after Kenris was born, Jennifer
was faced with the difficult decision of refusing the offer of a lifetime and staying with her children, or
taking the offer and provide for a much better life for them. With her mother's unwavering support,
Jennifer took the job with the Port Authority in Freeport Grand Bahama where she stayed for almost
15 years. Throughout her time in Freeport, she would send for her children, and her two youngest
siblings (Terry and Lisa) and even though together they engage in much mischief, Jennifer anxiously
awaiting and cherished these visits. She cared for her younger siblings as if they were her very own and
ensured that their wants and needs were always satisfied.
After spending so much time in Freeport, Jennifer became homesick, and wanted more time with her
family. She left her job at the Port Authority and took up a job with Britannia Towers, Paradise Island,
in the Food and Beverage department. During this time she forged many friendships, and a very special
one with her long-time friend Sandra Walkes who she loved dearly.
Jennifer's drive for "more" resulted in a departure from Resorts International and her first introduction
to the Private Banking world though Lloyds Bank International. She worked as an Executive Secretary for
many years, and later transitioned into Trust and Corporate administration. She had finally found a career
path which was fulfilling, and as luck would have it, three years into her new career Lloyds Bank announced
the closure of their Nassau Office.
Jennifer's daughters urged her to stay at home and enjoy her life as a woman of leisure, however at only
48 years, she felt that she was too young to retire. She accepted a position with Atlantic Medical and got
good exposure to the insurance industry. While she enjoyed working, she later realized that the benefits
of retirement far outweighed that of her employment, and she took her daughters' advice and "retired."
Unsurprisingly, she did everything BUT retire. Jennifer was the busiest retiree ever! In addition to travelling
the world with her family and friends, maintaining her precious garden, standing in as Grammy and Mom
when her daughters were busy with work, being the family's chef, chauffeur, motivator, cheerleader, and
assuming the role of our family's Matriarch, she took a more augmented role with her beloved Progressive
Liberal Party (PLP).
Jennifer always felt the desire to do more, and she started attending more PLP meetings, and volunteering
to serve in hopes of propelling her PLP party to victory. She was a social media political goddess! She had a
unique ability to rally troops and gather followers. So many persons often opined that Jennifer single handedly
won the 2012 election for the PLP on social media! During family gatherings we had to come to an agreement
that there would be NO POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS because no one could ever win a debate against Jennifer
and her beloved PLP.
Anyone who came into contact with Jennifer was immediately drawn to her. In addition to her striking physical
beauty, she had an electric personality. She had a strong love for life and a very curious nature. This led her to
travel the world, including visits to several countries where many will not dare go. She was an avid gym goer,
and was always ready to challenge someone to a leg lift battle. She loved positive people and would shut anyone
down who spoke of things that she felt was negative, or destructive. She always encouraged her family to do
more to better themselves and to associate with persons with a positive and progressive outlook; at times she
stepped on a few toes during her wise counsel but it was always done out of her desire to see her family
succeed in life!
Jennifer loved her family with a passion. Moneira and Kenris were the center of her universe and she would
move mountains for them. She loved her sons Harry (who adored her cooking and "not so funny jokes) and
Shane (her gentle giant who she affectionately called "Shane O." She loved her siblings and always wanted
more for them. She enjoyed the breakfast runs and daily calls from Scieska, and she enjoyed her Nita, aka
"Vicky: who was her precious devoted helpmate, who stayed at her bedside up to her final breath. She loved
and craved her baby sister Lisa, who she always wanted to ensure was OK. She loved her big brother Van
who she knew loved her so, and her sweet baby brother Terry always had a special place in her heart.
She adored her grandchildren, all of whom she took good care of and enjoyed spending time with, and she
loved and appreciated her nieces, nephews, and her extended family. Our Christmas lunches, and other family
functions will never be the same without Grammy J's world famous macaroni, crab and rice, her sweet "jokes"
and her affable personality that engaged all.
Her positive and prolific outlook in life shone through when she learned of her illness in 2017. Her immediate
reaction to this awful news was "it makes no sense crying over spilt milk, I need to focus on what I must do."
Throughout her illness, whenever doctors or visitors asked how she was feeling, she always replied "I feel great!"
Not once did she ask "Why me?" or complain about her condition, and we all thank God that through it all the one
constant is that she never felt pain. On 28th April 2019 she departed her earthly body with the same dignity, grace
and fearlessness with which she entered the world, and conducted herself when she walked amongst us.
Jennifer was a precious gem and she has left a huge void in our lives; she will never be replaced, but we seek
comfort in knowing that she is in the arms of our heavenly father, and rejoicing with her mother, sister and
other loved ones who predeceased her.
We love you so much Jennifer, Mom, Mommy, Jinny, Grammy J, Grammy, Aunt Jenny, Jenny, Jay, JJ. Rest in
Peace until we meet again.
Rejoicing the reunion of their heavenly souls are: her mother, Minerva Johnson and her Sister Paula
Johnson- Hurd.
