George Nelson Sands

August 20, 1934 — January 20, 2018

Nassau

George Nelson Sands Age 83 Years of #24 Roland Street, concluded his final transaction
at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

He was born Tuesday, August 20, 1934 in the beautiful Settlement of North Palmetto Point
Eleuthera, The Bahamas a handsome son was born to Mr. Harrison Sands and Medora
Sands nee Bethel. He was their second child and only son. His full name was George Nelson
but many knew him as Nelson.

He received his early education at the Palmetto Point All age school and because of his sharp
mind he was made a Monitor at the school.

He began his working career at the famous French Leave Hotel and later Potlatch Club on the
Banks road in Eleuthera. He later moved to Nassau to work in the General Post Office, he also
worked as an agent for Star Insurance Company where he moved up the position of Manager.
Later he formed his own Insurance Company which was called Bahamas International Assurance
Company. Over the years he took on other enterprises such as operating a restaurant called Tiffany's,
operating a service station and also a car dealership.

Through his connections at the Post Office he was introduced to Miss Malvina Francis who was a
cousin and neighbour of some of his Post Office buddies. The couple was wed on Wednesday,
March 16, 1960 at Zion Baptist Church East and Shirley Streets. This ceremony was performed by
Rev. Talmadge Sands. The couple moved to Ridgeland Park in 1964 and became a part of the
cornerstone families within that community.

Nelson and his wife Malvina affectionately known as Bess became a part of the political stream
that led to the first majority government of the country. During his tenure he served as one of
the branch Chairman of the PLP. Nelson also served as a leader in the area of Baseball and
other Community boards.

Over the last ten years of his life, he was deemed to be clinically blind and had to place very heavy
reliance on the care and service of his devoted wife Bess. Indeed her life had to be tied to whatever
needs he had.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, Nelson had to be taken to the emergency room at Princess
Margaret Hospital. He remained under their care until on Saturday, January 20, 2018 when he
moved from time to eternity around 11:00am May his soul rest in peace.
