Franklyn Ivan Carey Age 63 Years of #32 Plane Street, Pinewood Gardens, repaired his final vehicle at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Monday, January 19, 2026.
“Every life leaves a story worth telling, and every story leaves an imprint on the world.”
Franklyn Ivan Carey lived a life worthy of remembrance. His story is one that deserves to be told, for he left an enduring imprint on the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
On Thursday, August 02, 1962. Oswald and Helen Carey welcomed their third child, whom they named Franklyn Ivan Carey. Frank grew up in the close-knit community of Chippingham, enjoying a childhood filled with simple pleasures—shooting marbles, spinning tops, riding bicycles, and playing traditional games of that era. He was raised during a time when discipline, respect for elders, and responsibility were core values. Home before the streetlights came on, quick errands completed before “the spit dried,” and good manners were non-negotiable. For Frank, a naturally humble, soft-spoken, and respectful child, living by these principles came easily.
Frank began his formal education at Claridge Primary School and later graduated from C.C. Sweeting Senior High School. It was during these formative years that his inquisitive and mechanically gifted nature became evident. Highly hands-on and curious, Frank could dismantle and reassemble a bicycle with remarkable precision—often surpassing professional repair technicians. His curiosity soon expanded to motorbikes and, eventually, automobiles. Before long, Frank became the neighborhood mechanic, experimenting, learning, and refining his skills on any vehicle he could get his hands on.
In 1991, Frank’s life took on deeper meaning when his mother became gravely ill. Before her passing, she entrusted him with a solemn promise—to take care of his baby sister Kendra. Frank embraced this responsibility without hesitation and carried it out with unwavering commitment and love. He took this promise very seriously and did his utmost to honor it. This defining act of devotion prepared him for one of his most cherished roles: fatherhood. Frank loved and treasured his own children with everything he had, providing for them with the same sense of duty, care, and selflessness that guided his life.
Frank’s growing passion for automotive repair led him to secure employment with The Bahamas Telecommunications Corporation (BATELCO) in the mechanic workshop. This opportunity allowed Frank to further develop his expertise through specialized training and automotive repair courses. A defining highlight of his career came when he was selected to travel internationally to repair bucket trucks for a company whose own service technician were unable to restore the vehicles. In 1999, Frank’s career with BATELCO came to an end when the mechanic shop was outsourced. Undeterred, he and several colleagues joined together to establish their own company, Gen Auto. This venture enabled them to continue servicing the BATELCO fleet while also building a strong reputation through private automotive work.
True to the pattern he had established from a young age, Frank built his clientele organically through relationships. He became the preferred mechanic for staff at BATELCO/BTC, as well as for neighbors, friends, and their extended families. Exceptionally skilled and meticulous in his work, Frank’s warm personality and kindhearted spirit attracted people from all walks of life. Beyond mechanics, Frank was also a gifted cook—a talent he learned by observing his mother in the kitchen. His culinary skills became an added joy to his customers, many of whom would gather in his yard while he worked, hoping to sample whatever dish he prepared that day.
In 2012, Frank suffered a stroke that significantly limited his mobility and reduced the level of mechanical work he could perform. In December 2019, he suffered a second stroke that left him completely immobilized and bedridden. This marked the end of his professional career and the unfulfilled dream of one day becoming a chef.
On January 19, 2026, at 5:35 a.m., Franklyn Ivan Carey was called from Labour to reward. His work is now complete, and the life he lived—the service he rendered, the promises he kept, the love he gave, and the legacy he built—will continue to speak on his behalf.
