Dora Christina Jones-Dean Age 71 years of #11 Sunrise Road,
Gamble Heights off Blue Hill Road South, The Bahamas Check in her last
guest and sang her final alto at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Thursday, August 08, 2013.
She was born at Duncan Town Ragged Island, The Bahamas on Friday,
January 23, 1942. She is eldest child and only daughter of Erskine Nathaniel
and Ammie Augusta Wilson-Jones.
Mummy would be their only daughter and was raised in a home filled with
love, compassion and where discipline was the order of the day and readily
enforced. She was educated at the Amanda Wallace Pre-School under the
"Tamarind Tree" and later the All-Aged School, in Duncan Town, Ragged Island.
Being the oldest child, Mummy was very protective of her brother David "DJ",
and all who knew her were well aware of this.
Mummy continued her education at Windsor Lane Primary School, and
Southern Junior and Senior High Schools following the family's relocation
to New Providence from the "out island" in search of a better life. Her thirst
for knowledge however, did not stop there. She enrolled in Skinner's Business
College where she graduated "with honors" in Shorthand and Typing.
Her passion and commitment for seeing lives transformed and enriching
the lives of young people compelled her to pursue a certificate in girls
counseling with an emphasis in Girls Brigade Training from The Shortwood
College in Constance Springs, Jamaica.
During the 1950s, mummy met the man who would become her world;
the handsome and debonair, Wendell Verona Dean I of Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera.
There is some debate as to who actually introduced them. Marion Hutcheson,
who was mummy's Matron of Honor and her husband Jerome, the best man,
believes they were responsible for the union; but the late Sister Natalie
Hutcheson, always gently reminded us that it was she who'd introduced
mummy to her "cousin handsome bumps." They both however, agreed that
it was definitely love at first site. After courting for some time they were
joined in holy matrimony at the historic Bethel Baptist Church, by the late
Rev. Dr. H. W. Brown in 1961. This union was blessed with four lovely children,
two boys and two girls.
Mummy was a part of a large extended family, a fact made more evident
after the death of our daddy in 1970 and her father in 1973. Her resolve
was to strengthening the family unit, and she accomplished this with the
help of our Grammy, who was there while mummy worked. Mummy
endeavoured to make sure that we were all disciplined and structured.
In our home, there was one law and this applied to everyone, there was
no sparing the rod to spoil the children.
In additional to being a staunch disciplinarian, mummy had a strong work
ethic. Mummy worked as a cashier at City Market and Mr. Harding, her
Manager at the time often commented that she was his best cashier.
While employed as Manager with Pinder's Dry Goods on East Street,
mummy was afforded the opportunity to travel extensively to the United
States with the late Mrs. Pearl Pinder, who recognizing her eye for fashion
eventually made mummy the sole buyer for the shop; so much so that
following the death of our father in 1970, Mr. David Pinder gave mummy
the opportunity to become an entrepreneur and allowed her the use of a
building they owned on the corner of East and Peter Streets to open her
own Dry Goods Store. And yes, in the spirit of entrepreneurship, mummy
took the bull by the horn. She travelled to New York and provided her
clients with the latest in clothing, hats and accessories. Her children were
also the beneficiaries of her flair for fashion and were always dressed in
the latest styles.
In additional to operating her business, mummy also pursued a career in
the Insurance industry, working at different intervals for Oxford and Star
Insurance Companies.
She also received numerous awards in Professional and Impromptu Public
Speaking from The Dale Carnegie Institute. Additionally, she attended the
Hotel Training College which prepared her for twenty three years she spent
in the hotel industry, working first at the Lowes Paradise Island and Villas
and Ambassador Beach Hotel, now Breezes as a Front Desk Cashier, Front
Desk Supervisor, Grats Coordinator, and finally retiring in 1994 as a General Cashier.
Mummy was known as "Sister D", "Mama D" and Aunt Dora; but to her Pastor,
The Rev. Timothy Stewart, she was "The One and Only Dora Dean." She was a
faithful member of the historic Bethel Baptist Church, where she served as a
Sunday School Teacher, Vice-President and Youth Director of the Youth
Department, was instrumental in forming the Second Company of The Girls
Brigade, member of the Prayer Band, Secretary of Mission Circle, President of
the Senior Choir for 25 years and Travel Coordinator for the church's travels to
The Progressive National Baptist Convention from the 1980s to 2006.
"Sister D" was also part of the prison fellowship and visitation, along with
the late Rev H. W. Brown, Rev. Bertram Armbrister, Evangelist Alicia Armbrister,
Evangelist Mother Rand, Evangelist Yvonne Pratt, Mother Alrena Pinder and others.
The impact of her influence during visits to The Boys and Girls Industrial Schools,
The Princess Margaret, Sandilands and Geriatric Hospitals and The Old Folks
Home have been far-reaching. It was not uncommon for random people we
considered strangers to approach and thank her for helping them. That was
just mummy and she is loved and will forever be missed.
