Darnell Christine Ivy Johnson-Grant age 49 years of #39 Hay Street East
baked her final loaf and close the oven of this life, at her residence on Friday, April 01, 2011.
She was born at Nassau, New Providence, the Bahamas on Sunday, July 02, 1961.
Darnell attended Woodcock Primary, T. Gibson Primary, T. G. Glover Jr. High Schools
and The Government High Schools.
Darnell's first job was at Kentucky Fried Chicken, East Bay Shopping Centre.
She was later employed at Lyford Cay. For the past fourteen years she had
been employed at Purity Bakery on Market Street.
While at Government High, she met Calvin Grant. Some years later they
were joined in holy matrimony and became the parents of three children-
Fraya, Nyasha and Calvin Jr. Darnell loved and cared for her stepdaughter,
Calvonya, as much as her own children.
She lived on Hay Street, just a short distance from the Labour Street homestead,
and she checked on her mother, her daughters and grandchildren almost every day.
As a part of the "Johnson Clan," Darnell brought joy and excitement to family gatherings.
She had a keen sense of humour and could be relied upon to keep the family updated on
the recent neighborhood activities. Everyone looked forward to her tasty macaroni and cheese.
Darnell would recall many unforgettable moments of her childhood years growing up on
Labour Street. She became excited when she talked about good times shared in the long tub,
going to Junkanoo with the Clan, watching movies, picking coco plums, sea grapes and going on picnics.
Darnell lovingly cared for her maternal grandparents, the late Ivy and Christopher Johnson,
especially during her grandfather's illness. She was devoted to her mother and to her daughters.
To her only son, she was a precious pearl. To her grandchildren, she was more precious than gold.
To her brothers and sisters, she was a kind and generous person. To her nieces and nephews,
uncles, aunts and cousins she was a committed eager listener and confidante, always willing
to assist wherever she could.
One of Darnell's many talents was her ability to work wonders with hair. Whether corn rows,
braids, perms or extensions, she was able to produce remarkable hairstyles. When her cousins
Larrie, Ree, Shawnie and others were attending school, the family knew that Darnell's Sunday
afternoons would be taken up giving these youngsters their hairdos for the week.
In fact, Darnell's mother was preparing to go to her daughter for her weekly hair set when she
received the devastating news that Darnell had collapsed at home.
Like most of her family, Darnell had attended Our Lady's Roman Catholic Church. However,
more recently her mother had invited her to Crusade meetings at the Grants Town Seventh
Day Adventist Church. She was converted, baptized and became a member of this church.
The deep shock of her unexpected passing is something with which our family is
grappling while we accept the fact that God never makes a mistake. She will be
missed more than words could ever express.
The Radiance of this "Ruby of A Gem" will always glow in the hearts of her:
