Cecil Arrington McCardy Jr. Age 64 Years of Hatchet Bay Eleuthera,
the Bahamas constructed his final earthly building and rode his last mile at
Queens Highway, Governors Harbour Eleuthera, the Bahamas on Saturday, April 09, 2011.
Little did we know that we would have been reflecting on you and the wonderful life we
experienced because you were a part of it. Cecil and Veronica your parents were overjoyed
on Wednesday, March 26, 1947 when they were blessed with a handsome bouncing baby boy.
Mom often reflected on your studiousness and conscientiousness as well as your hard working
and mannerly attitude as you were growing up. She often spoke of your frugality and how as a
boy one shilling would last you longer than most youngsters your age.
We even remember that as a young man you took time out every Saturday to take Mom and Dad
and your younger siblings riding in the truck-we loved those rides with you. Gink, you were so
smart and excelled and perfected anything you attempted to do. Remember your first days learning
carpentry with Dad, when you were only around fourteen and then with Uncle Isaac. After that,
you were well on your way to becoming a master carpenter. After your years with the Naval Base
in their carpentry workshop, you decided to go on your own as a full time contractor.
There are many houses and buildings you constructed all over the island, in particular Rainbow Bay,
Hatchet Bay and Eleuthera Island shores. You were also a roofing expert and did an excellent job on
the construction of the roof of the new Catholic Church in Hatchet Bay. You were the best!
We always admired how you were so studious with what God gave you. You were never wasteful
and took great care to save- to help your-self and family as well as others. We are still amazed how
you could turn what others deemed trash into treasure. You were proud to use your skills to turn
something old new again-that always amazed us.
"GInky", when you decided to look for a wife you went to Dad's home town and found a beautiful young lady.
As you confided in us sisters when you came home, 'She has such beautiful eye brows'! Merna was the apple
of your eye and you brought her to Hatchet Bay after you got married in May of 1971. The birth of your four
children, Cecil, Nicole, Janica and Ryan, completed the joy. You and Merna reared them with pride, teaching
them Godly principles. You helped them in numerous ways to help them become productive citizens.
Merna was a great wife and mother, who took time out to embrace your three other children from before
the marriage, Aretha, Carla (decease) and Mathew. We had such wonderful times with you and your family.
You and Merna were very warm and welcoming; we were always at your house every chance we got.
We're all going to miss those big hugs you gave us whenever we met.
When Merna became ill, it was a difficult time for all of us. You and the family took her to
doctors in Nassau, Cuba and the U.S. seeking help. Unfortunately though, she succumbed
to her illness and went to a better place.
We watched you as you expressed how much you missed her. You often said even though
she was ill you had a companion, you had someone to care for, to talk to. You looked forward
to caring for her and cooking healthy nutritious meals in hopes it would help her to heal.
Despite the lost and loneliness you felt, you continued to do what you liked-Cycling.
We remember that after that first heart attack eleven years ago, you began a regimen
of exercise and healthy eating. You changed your life style and incorporated cycling
into your daily regimen. Many would remember seeing you on your bicycle as you rode
all over the island from Bannerman Town to Spanish Wells. This became more than an
exercise to you, it was now a hobby, but the evenings and nights were still lonely and you
prayed for a companion, someone who was compatible with you. Your prayers were answered
in the form of another beautiful lady from your Father's home town. Hazel came into your life
like a breath of fresh air. She filled the void you felt and now you had another reason to get up
in the morning in addition to attending your immaculate garden and cycling.
You and Hazel just married over two months ago and were looking forward to many happy years
together. She doted on you and you loved her. You were just telling us on Wednesday of your planned
trip to Cuba in May where you would take your new wife touring, but God had other plans.
