Captain Hezron Lenox "Capt., Papa, Grumpa, Hezzie, White Head" Moxey Sr.
Age 79 Years of #36 Washington Street sailed from the seas of life into eternity, at the
Princess Margaret Hospital on Thursday, October 25, 2007.
Captain Moxey was born in Duncan Town, Ragged Island on Thursday, May 10, 1928.
Our Jewel of the Sea, was the only son and second child.
He will long be remembered as the "Godfather" of Bahamian sloop sailing,
and all of his sailing escapades will be etched indelibly in our memories and
will forever linger in the hearts of many.
Capt. Hezron Lenox "Hezzie" Moxey was a man of iconic proportion,
his innate and instinctive ability to sloop sail and master the waves has
been told countless times. By the age of 18 he became a Master Mariner
and sailed the major water ways. He was one of the first Bahamian
Chief Inspectors of The Bahamas Police Force Marine Division.
You can truly say that Hezron Moxey's name will always be synonymous
with sloop sailing in The Bahamas. Sailing was his life and his passion.
He shared his gifts and talents with many young men, and has trained
some of the great skippers of today. The scores of sailors who have benefited
from his knowledge and mentorship will go down in the annuls of Bahamian
history and folklore. Sailing as our proposed national sport and pastime will
be that much richer because of his contribution and dedication to the sport.
The love he had for his faithful wife and all of his loving children, will be our
mainstay as we recall with pride his many accomplishments. This rare jewel
of a man, born with sailing in his bloodline, and hailing from the quaint
settlement of Duncan Town, Ragged Island has given us the ultimate jewel,
the precious jewel of love. Daddy's determination and hard work inspired all
of us to achieve the very best in our lives. He would always boastfully proclaim
that his quiver was full, and that God had blessed him to live a long and prosperous
life to see his great grand children.
As a young man on Ragged Island he met and fell in love with a brown
skinned gal named Elva Joffre. They were united in Holy Matrimony on
Thursday, December 4, 1947 and this union was blessed with nine children.
Affectionately known as "Hezrin," "my daddy," "grumpar," "papa," "my uncle,"
"bren-law," "cousin Hezzie," "Capt.," "White Head" and "The King," the Captain
of our lives has danced on the tides and sailed His last wave. Our Jewel of the Sea
has lived a life that was rich and full, embracing life's moments His way. His ruddy
Indian complexion, wooly white hair and twinkling eyes will not be forgotten.
