Captain Henricus Fritzgerald Maycock

February 21, 1904 — September 8, 1998

Nassau

Captain Henricus Fritzgerald "Papa" Maycock Age 94 Years of Kenilworth Avenue,
South Beach Estates set sail for eternity, on Tuesday, September 08, 1998.

He was born at Duncan Town Ragged Island, Bahamas on Sunday, February 21, 1904.
Papa as he was affectionately called, received his early education at the Ragged Island All Aged School.
Upon the completion of his studies, he went to sea with his father. Initially they engaged in trading,
bartering marine products, such as fish and turtle along with salt and farm produce in other islands.
The farm produce was sold in Nassau for cash. The trading business peaked during World War II
when Papa and crew brought much fruits and grain supplies into the Bahamas from Haiti and Cuba.
The outbreak of the Cuban Revolution brought an abrupt ending to this trade.

In 1928, Henricus was joined in holy wedlock to Vashti Wilson.
Thirteen children were born to this union, seven of whom have preceded him in death.
In search of a better way of life papa worked on the project in the United States of America
for many years to support his growing family. On return from the project papa spent most
of his time harvesting salt and farming on a small scale. His spare time was
given to building lime kiln. The lime was used to help build roads on Ragged Island.
Plaiting and making salt baskets from sisal and straw were also papa's hobbies.

Papa was a good disciplinarian and believed in the rule of law. As a result,
he was appointed Local Constable at Ragged Island and served in this
capacity with distinction for many years.

In the late 1950's he retired from the sea in order to give more time to the
service of that church and work of God. He was appointed Lay Reader in
the Holy Innocence Anglican Church at Ragged Island, where he served
until his health began to fail him. Papa moved to Nassau where he lived
with his son-in-law Daniel and his only daughter Mary Jane, who took
good care of him until time of his death.
