Rev. Dr. Albert Ernest Hutcheson II, J. P. Age 80 Years of #21 Greenway Drive,
Golden Gates #2 Nassau, New Providence, the Bahamas, went home to be with the Lord at
North Shore Medical Center Hospice on Friday, August 31, 2001.
Asquith or Uncle Asquith as he lovingly called by his family and friends was born in the
quaint and historic settlement of Alice Town Eleuthera, Bahamas on Thursday, March 17, 1921.
The Rev. Dr. A. E. Hutcheson received the greater portion of his education
under the tutorship of the Rev. Dr. Percy Alexander Gibson at the elementary
school at Hatchet Bay Eleuthera to whom he is very much indebted.
On Sunday, August 20, 1944 he met and married Belle Emerald Hepburn.
This union produced four children.
He enrolled at the University of the West Indies in Kingston Jamaica in 1971
and also the United Theological College on the Mona Campus. He was successful
in obtaining his Bachelor of Theology Degree at the American Baptist Theological
Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. He successfully passed the high school
achievement test in Nashville; he was ordained to the Christian Ministry the
year of his graduation at Spruce Baptist Church, then pastured by the
Rev. Caesar W. Clarke. After graduating from American Baptist Theological Seminary,
Dr. Hutcheson served as the editor of the Baptist News Weekly and was a founding
member of the first black political grouping in the Bahamas, called the Citizen's
Committee in Nassau. He was also a founding member of the People's Penny Savings Bank.
Dr. Hutcheson has had more than nine years experience in welfare work in the United States
and the Bahamas. In the United States, he pastured a church in Perrine Florida, he also served
as a presiding officer in general elections in the Bahamas. He served as a probation officer in
Kendall Florida for a number of years and he served as a minister at the
Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Miami Florida. During the early 60's,
he became a Civil Rights Activist in South Florida and had the opportunity to
march alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he played an instrumental role in
participating in boycotts and other struggles for civil rights. During the years,
he received notable commendations from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and former
United States President William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton.
He served as the first Probation Officer in the family islands. At Freeport Grand Bahama
in the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, and was elected President of the Grand Bahama Christian
Council, he also formerly served as an administrative assist. While in Grand Bahama,
he was a member of the Hurricane Committee, the Grand Bahama Cemetery Board
and the Grand Bahama Bible Society. He has also served as the Historian of the
Bahamas National Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention and has been
heralded as an Historian of the commonwealth of the Bahamas. He is a member
of the Bahamas Writer's Society.
In 1973, he served as liaison Officer of the Bahamas Christian Council and
Independence Secretariat during the independence era. He played a key role
in directing the National religious program for the Independence Day Celebration
of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. In 1974, on the recommendation of the
Prime Minister Pindling's Cabinet, the late Sir Milo B. Butler appointed him as a
Justice of the Peace throughout the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
His beloved uncle, the late Rev. Dr. H. W. Brown was his personal mentor and
he served as Associate Minister under his pastorship for a number of years.
His nephew and confidant, the late Archdeacon William Thompson and he
served together in the Bahamas Christian Council for many years.
He also served as the associate Pastor at Mission Baptist Church under Rev. Dr. R. E. Cooper.
Most recently, Dr. Hutcheson served as the Associate Pastor of the
Kemp Road Union Baptist Church, of which Rev. Ivan Ford Butler,
B. A., is the pastor. He was the expositor of the church, he is the author
of This Is Their Story-Independence 1973, a book that traces the life stories of some of the
most distinguished Bahamian Clergymen who have helped to shape the history of the Bahamas,
before it became an independent nation on July 10, 1973. In addition, he was noted for his posture
in society for speaking out on a number of issues that affected the people of the Bahamas and was
found writing a number of articles in the Nassau Guardian, the Journal and the Tribune.
Dr. Hutcheson was an active member of the Bahamas Christian Council and
appeared on its television programs. He was recognized by the media on several
occasions and was known to have preached on Morning devotions as well as on
the "In Touch" radio program.
On the recommendation of the Rev. Dr. Philip Rahming, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Robertson,
the President of Richmond Virginia Seminary in Richmond Virginia on Monday, June 25, 1990
awarded Dr. Hutcheson the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity at a service at
Messiah Baptist Church in Nassau, Bahamas.
He was the first to advocate that the Nassau International Airport,
should be named the Sir Lynden Oscar Pindling International Airport.
But most of all, he was a man that truly loved God and all of his service
was based on his adoration of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To God Be The Glory!!
